JOHN THE BAPTIST

Read: Luke 3:1–20

Finally they said, "Who are you? . . . "John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord." John 1:22–23 NIV (Isaiah 40:3)

John the Baptist was the last prophet preceding the coming of Messiah. He knew from the time he was a child that God had special plans for his life. No doubt, his parents prepared him as they told him of Gabriel's message to Zechariah,
"And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous-to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." (Luke 1:17)

We, like John, have a special purpose for living. As believers, our primary purpose is to glorify God with our lives. John was a special called-out prophet, but we believers are also called to be conformed to the image of Christ. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son… (Romans 8:29 NKJV)

Lord, may our lives become more and more like Yours as we look into the mirror of Your Word.

THE BOY JESUS

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. Luke 2:46-47 NIV

Mary and Joseph were busily talking with their friends on the way to Nazareth, knowing that they didn't have to check on their son, Jesus. But when they could not find him a day's journey out, they were understandably concerned. When they finally found him, Mary was distraught and she said to him, "Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously." And He said to them, "Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. (Luke 2:48–50 NKJV)

This exchange between mother and Son was, at least in part, a fulfillment of Simeon's words to Mary, "And a sword will pierce your own soul too." (Luke 2:35) Mary spoke of "your father and I", and Jesus spoke of "My Father," and they didn't understand.

Lord, help me to see the eternal significance of Your plan for my family, even when I don't understand.

RACHAEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under– Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: Matthew 2:16–17 NIV

More than 1400 years before Christ was born, the patriarch Jacob buried his beloved wife, Rachel. We read, "So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel's tomb." (Genesis 35:19–20) The prophet Jeremiah predicted a future day when children would be slaughtered near Rachel's grave. (Jeremiah 31:15) This was fulfilled when Herod killed all of the male babies under two, trying to destroy the Jewish Messiah.

We live in a day where it could be said "A voice was heard in America of weeping and mourning for children, because they are no more." The travesty of millions of babies aborted over the past thirty plus years must grieve your heart, Lord. Don't let us become apathetic to the cries of unborn babies, or the grief caused to women in our day.

WISE MEN STILL SEEK HIM

THE WISE MEN AND HEROD

Read Matthew 2:1–12 & Micah 5:2

When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: Matthew 2:4–5

Long before Jesus was born, the prophets had predicted His coming. The priests and rabbis knew that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem because of a prophesy they related to Herod and the wise men. We know that even the common people were taught this prophesy, since later–when Jesus started His ministry–the people said, "How can the Christ come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" (John 7:41b-42)

The people must not have realized that He was born in Bethlehem at the time of the census. The Jews of Jesus time really had no excuse for not recognizing their Messiah. Had they truly been looking for Him, they would have known who He was–just as the Wise Men and even Herod did.

Lord, I praise You for the reliability of Your Word. Help me to be willing to share the message of Your coming with my children, their friends and all who might be seeking for truth. As the Christmas cards say, "Wise men still seek Him."

REVEALER OF HEARTS

SIMEON
Read Luke 2:21-40

Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined… to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too." Luke 2:34–35 NIV

Holding the newborn baby in his arms, Simeon spoke prophetic words: Mary's life would be filled with both joy and sorrow, her baby would be at the center of controversy, her Son would be the revealer of hearts – even her own.

Mary would have to learn to step back, be silent, and continue to ponder things in her heart. Shepherds could praise Him, Pharisees would curse Him and children would adore Him – but Mary could only quietly pray for Him. He was her son, but he was also her Savior. God's plan would proceed as she stood by and watched.

Lord, I know You have a plan for each of our children. Mary had some very human sons and daughters in addition to her perfect Son, Jesus. Would they ever accept Him as Messiah? No doubt, Mary prayed that her other children would receive Him as their personal Savior. It wasn't until after the resurrection that they truly believed – but in God's perfect time – Mary's prayers were answered.

GOD WITH US

IMMANUEL

Read Isaiah 7:10-14, 9:1-7; Matthew 1:18-2:6

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means, "God with us." Matthew 1:22–23 NIV

The book of Isaiah was written about 700 years before Christ was born and is filled with prophesies about the coming Messiah. When the angel Gabriel appeared to Joseph, he quoted Isaiah 7:14:
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Jesus would be called, "Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6b)

Isaiah prophesied that this Holy Child would live "In Galilee of the Gentiles.” saying, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined." (Isaiah 9:1b-2 NKJV)

Dear Lord, You truly are my Wonderful Counselor and I am so thankful that the light of the gospel shined on me. Just as Isaiah foretold the coming of Jesus, help me to tell the good news wherever I go, especially to members of my family. Keep me faithful in reading Your Word so that I will have something fresh to share with my family and friends.

FULFILLED PROPHESY

TIDINGS OF JOY

Read Luke 2:8–20

"Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:10–11 NKJV

Exhausted but happy, Joseph wraps his newborn babe in swaddling clothes and lays him at Mary's side. They are alone, in the city of their birth, but not their home. Only the sounds of nearby animals disturb their quiet conversation. What will life be like with this child of God? Soon they will be able to consummate their marriage and build a family together.

Meanwhile, out in the nearby fields, a lowly group of shepherds are in for a big surprise. Suddenly an angel appears in the night sky surrounded by the glory of the Lord. He announces, “There is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (2:11) Lonely quiet places - this stable - those fields - where all of history would be changed. Even today we date our lives from this event.

Lord, help me to value the lonely, quiet moments of my life. They are so few and yet so valuable. Speak to my heart this morning with words of peace. Like Mary, I truly desire to understand Your ways and ponder them in my heart.

BETHLEHEM

Joseph also went up… to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. Luke 2:4–5 NKJV

Mary was in the last stages of her pregnancy when they heard very distressing news. The ruler of Rome declared that a census be taken, forcing everyone to go to the city of their birth to register. Hardship or not, they had to comply with this order.

Joseph must have been deeply concerned about his wife during the trip to Bethlehem. He probably did not consider at the time that prophesy was being fulfilled. Over 700 years before, the prophet Micah predicted that the promised Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

Life is not always convenient or comfortable - sometimes circumstances may be overwhelming. Lord, give us peace in those times, knowing that You are a God who cares and watches over us. Help us to remember that all things work together for good to those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. (Romans 8:28)

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to me the one to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting." Micah 5:2 NKJV

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD

MARY AND ELIZABETH

Read Luke 1:26-80

"Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God." Luke 1:36–37 NIV

Six months after the angel Gabriel visited Zechariah, leaving him unable to speak because of unbelief, he made another announcement to a young virgin named Mary, telling her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God."

* * *

Mary's response after hearing all that Gabriel said was, "I am the Lord's servant, May it be to me as you have said." (1:35, 38) She traveled hurriedly from Nazareth to the hill country of Judea to see Elizabeth, now great with child–and Zechariah who was still mute, because he had not believed.

* * *

Elizabeth said, "Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!" (1:45) Perhaps Mary's youth made her less skeptical, but the miracle of a virgin birth was far more unusual than the birth of a child in old age. Lord, help me to believe the promises in Your Word, even when it seems impossible – because with God all things are possible.

And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed… " Luke 1:46–48 NIV

ORDINARY PEOPLE

ZECHARIAH AND ELIZABETH

Read Luke 1:1-25

"Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord." Luke 1:13-15a NIV

For many years this humble couple in Jerusalem wanted a child, but in spite of continued disappointment, they faithfully served and obeyed God. Zechariah was one of many priests who took their turns burning incense in the temple. How surprised he must have been at this sudden visit by the angel Gabriel, promising him a son - so surprised that he reacted in unbelief: Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." (Luke 1:18)

How wonderful it is that God chooses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Little did Zechariah and Elizabeth realize that they would become the parents of John the Baptist, the prophesied forerunner of Jesus the Messiah.

* * *

Lord, I have no idea what your plans are for the future of our children, but my deepest desire is that they will follow You. We are ordinary people, but I am trusting in Your extraordinary plan for our lives.

* * *

THANKSGIVING THOUGHTS

The month of November brings us to that time of year when we gather with friends and family to express our thankfulness to God for His many blessings. It is a time when churches and charitable groups provide food for families in need. Our church has a weekly grocery program for families in our area and a sumptuous banquet the day before Thanksgiving.

People can contribute to this program throughout the year at our local grocery stores. No doubt this sort of practical ministry will grow as our country experiences a deepening recession. But even more important, is the ministry of sharing the Bread of Life with those who do not know Jesus.

I am especially thankful for the opportunity to share God’s Word with people throughout the world by way of the internet. I continue to be amazed at the way in which this tool makes it possible to share one on one with someone I have never met, but who has a very real need of encouragement and the love of Jesus.

Now as we enter December, it is time to pause from our regular reading schedule and focus on the story of the Babe of Bethlehem. All of the Old Testament prophets foretold His coming and just as they looked forward to His first appearing, so we look forward to His return. But this month we will go back to the foundation of our faith in the Lord Jesus, Messiah, promised through the ages and fulfilled in Bethlehem.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE

ELISHA

Read 2 Kings 6:8–23; Ephesians 6:10–18

"Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." 2 Kings 6:16 NIV

The king of Syria (Aram) made war against Israel, but every time he planned where he would camp, God would speak to Elisha who would warn the king of Israel. When the king of Syria found out that Elisha was the informant, he sent horses and chariots and a great army to capture him.

* * *

Elisha’s servant arose early one morning and there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. Elisha prayed, and said, "LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." and the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (2 Kings 6:17 NKJV)

As we read the miraculous events in the lives of Elijah and Elisha, it is difficult to relate. But God's Word tells us that we too are surrounded by angelic protection. We are in a spiritual battle just as real as the physical one Elisha experienced. But God has promised that “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

Lord, I pray for your protection for my family and my church as we seek to glorify You and share Your precious Word in our community and throughout the world. Help us to be prepared by putting on the whole armor of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18)

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Ephesians 6:14-16 NIV

I HAVE TO WHAT?

NAAMAN

Read 2 Kings 5:1–14

“Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn't I wash in them and be cleansed?" 2 Kings 5:12 NIV

Naaman was the commander of the army of Syria, (Aram) enemy of Israel. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. His wife's young Israeli servant, who had been captured in a raid, told him that there was a prophet in Israel who could heal him.

* * *

Naaman expected some sort of dramatic production by Elisha the prophet, but instead he was told to humble himself and wash seven times in the Jordan River–the territory of his enemy. At first he reacted in rage saying, "I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.” (2 Kings 5:11)

Like many people today, Naaman balked at the simplicity and humility required for his healing. Some find it hard to admit that they are sinners in need of Jesus who said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) Through him we have forgiveness and eternal life.

* * *

Lord, thank You for giving Your Son on the cross so that I could be cleansed of my sin. Give me the opportunity to share my faith, just as Naaman's servant girl shared hers, even in enemy territory.

* * *

So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy. 2 Kings 5:14 NIV

FACING THE IMPOSSIBLE

EMPTY JARS AND DITCHES

Read 2 Kings 3:1–4:7

"Make this valley full of ditches. For this is what the LORD says: 'You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink.' " 2 Kings 3:16-17 NIV

In these stories, Elisha performs two miracles: One for the armies of Judah and Israel, asking God to deliver them from the Moabites–and the other for a widow and her sons who could not pay her creditors. In each case, Elisha asked them to do something that demonstrated their faith: The armies were to dig ditches–in anticipation that God would fill them with water. The widow and her sons were to gather empty jars–believing that God would fill them with oil.

Both the armies and the widow were faced with a situation they couldn’t handle alone. They had to acknowledge that God was able to meet their needs, by obeying the Word of the Lord spoken through Elisha. The jars were filled with oil and the ditches with water–which miraculously appeared to be blood–causing the Moabites to be defeated.

We too can be victorious when our hearts are filled with the water of God’s Word and faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ for our sins. Like the widow’s jars, we will too be filled with the oil of God’s Holy Spirit. Lord, I bring my empty jar to You. Fill me with a double portion of Your Holy Spirit as I walk out into this day, and may the oil and water continue to flow out to others through me.

CHARIOT OF FIRE

ELIJAH AND ELISHA

Read 1 Kings 19:19–21; 2 Kings 2:1–14

As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 2 Kings 2:11-12 NIV

There is no doubt that Elijah stood tall among the prophets of all time. He entered Heaven with as much drama as he lived. Only one other man entered Heaven without dying, and that was Enoch, who simply "walked with God." right into Heaven. (Genesis 5:24)
Elijah's great power came from God's Spirit resting on him. The younger Elisha–who watched as Elijah was taken to Heaven–requested and received a double portion of God's Spirit and continued the ministry. (2 Kings 2:9)

The time will come when all of the believers on earth will experience a day when the “Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)

Dear Jesus, I am looking forward to that day when both those who have died in the Lord and those who remain–will be caught up to be with You forever. May my life reflect that hope and may I always walk with You

According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 1 Thessalonians 4:15 NIV

TIMES OF DEPRESSION

ELIJAH AND THE PROPHETS OF BAAL

Read 1 Kings Chapters 18–19

Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried,"The LORD–he is God! The LORD–he is God!" 1 Kings 18:38-39 NIV

* * *

Elijah's eight recorded miracles are among the most spectacular in the Bible–Elijah prayed, and God answered–but not long after his courageous contest with the prophets of Baal, a threat by Jezebel sent him into deep depression. In his despondency, Elijah believed that he was all alone in his faith. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life–” (1 Kings 19:4)

Eventually after forty days of running, and several miraculous signs, God spoke to Elijah in a still small voice saying; “I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him." (19:18 NKJV) It is human nature to be depressed when we are exhausted–or have had a major victory–followed by down time. Like Elijah, we often need to hear the still small voice of the Holy Spirit assuring our hearts.

Lord, help me to turn to You when I feel like I am standing alone in a worldly culture. I want to be true to You, no matter how tired or discouraged I am. Help me to trust You for the strength I need to be faithful.

The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;

ELIJAH AND THE WIDOW

So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. 1 Kings 17:15–16 NIV

God judged an evil king by bringing famine on the land, just as He had prophesied through Elijah. But in the midst of the famine, God provided for a destitute widow and her son. First, the woman had to be willing to use her last bit of flour and oil to feed the prophet. Then by a miracle of supply, her oil and flour never ran out until the rains came.

* * *

Sometimes the difficulties we face may be caused by the sin or wrong choices of other people. God may allow a situation that has nothing to do with us personally, except for providing an opportunity to trust Him. But just as He cared for this widow and her son, God sees and cares about our needs.

* * *

Lord, I don't always have to know why something is happening–I just need to trust you as the one who supplies our needs–both physical and emotional. Whenever I am worried, help me to remember this:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV)

SOLOMON'S DOWNFALL

Read 1 Kings 10:1–11:13

King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart. 1 Kings 10:23–24 NIV

When Solomon started out as king, he was humble and had a desire to please the Lord. God blessed him with more wisdom than any other world leader – but Solomon still had to choose between what he knew was right and wrong. The test was obedience, and Solomon failed. He made treaties with wicked kings and married their daughters as part of the arrangement. We are told that He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. (11:5) Solomon’s downfall came because his wives led him astray. (11:3b)

Lord, help us to be careful about the influences on our children. Help us to speak often about the importance of choosing good friends and a godly husband or wife. Give us discernment to notice rebellious attitudes, and deal with them wisely. Speak to their hearts through Your Holy Spirit so that our words will be well received.

THE QUARRY

SOLOMON'S TEMPLE

Read 1 Kings 6

In building the temple, only blocks dressed at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool was heard at the temple site while it was being built. 1 Kings 6:7 NIV

Solomon was given the task of building the temple according to God’s exact specifications. Among those details were instructions to dress the stones at the quarry, not at the temple site. The temple itself could not be desecrated by the harsh pounding of hammer or chisel. Someone walking past the site would see only the quiet actions of master builders–gifted by God–setting the stones in place.

We are told that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Each day should find us at the “quarry” of Jesus our Rock, being molded into shape by His Word. Only then will those walking by the temple site of our lives see calm, peaceful activity as we use our talents for Him.

Lord, as I sit before you just now–mold me into your desired shape and use. May I exhibit the evidence of Your Holy Spirit in my life today to my children, my husband and everyone who walks by.

When David’s son Solomon first became king, Solomon realized that he was young and inexperienced. When God appeared to him in a dream he said, “I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties… So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong." (1 Kings 3:7b,9a) God gave him even more than he asked–he also gave him wealth and honor, commending him for his righteous and humble request.

God is pleased when we ask Him for wisdom, believing that we will receive it. He promises, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him–-but when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:5-6)

Lord, Your insistence that I believe and not doubt gives me confidence to ask for guidance in every decision. It also gives me hope that my words and actions will be effective in the lives of our children, as I trust you to bring about godly character in them.

One of the greatest desires of David's heart was to build a house of worship for God. But he was not permitted to build the temple, because he had been a man of war. Instead, Solomon would be the one to build it, according to God's specific instructions, in a time of peace. So David went about assembling materials and planning the work his son would do.

When he was very old, and ready to hand the kingdom over to Solomon, he charged his son with the admonition to devote his heart and soul to the Lord, saying, “May the LORD give you discretion and understanding… you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the LORD gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged.” (22:12-13) Solomon's success as a king would be dependant on his relationship with God.

This is the same message all Christian parents should give to their sons and daughters: First and foremost, "love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." (Mark 12:30) Lord, help us to communicate Your love to our children so that they will want to follow You.

Before David saw God’s promise of a his kingship fulfilled–he fought in many battles and lived through very difficult times. When God finally delivered him from all his enemies and the hand of Saul, David sang God’s praises:
“He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me… but the LORD was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.” (vv. 18-20)

God’s way and God’s timing were perfect. Not only that, but in His appointed time – God would bring forth His only begotten Son through the line of David. The promised Messiah would give His life to pay for David’s sins and for the sins of all who would believe in Him. God’s ways are not our ways. He knows the whole picture from beginning to end.

Lord, I know your timing is perfect and you have a plan for my life and for each of my loved ones, just as you did for David. Help me Lord, to keep an eternal perspective, knowing that You have all things under control.

David wanted to build a temple for the Lord God. He told Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent." (17:1) But David's desire was not to be fulfilled in his lifetime. His son Solomon would build the temple.
God had an even greater plan for David than this: He said to Nathan, “Tell my servant David …When your days are over and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom… I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever."(17:11, 14)

Jesus Christ will one day sit on the throne of David, and His kingdom will be forever. But today, God’s house is the temple where His Holy Spirit dwells–in the hearts and lives of believers.

David, though a man after God’s own heart, was far from perfect. He was involved in an adulterous affair with Bathsheba and sent her husband into the heat of battle to cover his sin. But God does not allow sin to be hidden forever. He sent the prophet Nathan to confront David saying, “Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes?” (12:9a)

There would be serious consequences for David’s sin. His own son Absalom would turn against him and be killed in battle as a result. The child born to Bathsheba would also die. But even as these consequences played out, we see that God did not give up on David. David’s faith brought him back to fellowship with the Lord, and God’s plan moved forward. David and Bathsheba had another son, Solomon, who is an ancestor of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord, thank You that Your faithfulness does not depend on our perfection. I will never be the perfect wife or mother or friend. But when I fail, I know that I can come to you for forgiveness and restoration.

Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt. 1 Samuel 18:3-4 NIV

David’s success in battle resulted in Saul’s extreme jealousy toward him. The people loved David–singing and dancing in his honor when he returned from battle. As they danced, they sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands."(1 Samuel 18:7)
Jonathan, Saul’s son, could have been jealous also, but the Spirit of God drew him into a loving covenant with his future king. Jonathan’s story is a beautiful picture of the covenant we enter, when we receive Jesus as our friend and Savior. Just as Jonathan said, 'The LORD is witness between you and me…forever.'" (1 Samuel 20:42) Likewise, the covenant of salvation God makes with us through faith in His Son is forever even into eternity.

When Eliab, David's oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he asked, "Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I know how conceited you are … you came down only to watch the battle." "Now what have I done?" said David. "Can't I even speak?" He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter… 1 Samuel 17:28‑30

I cannot help but smile in reading this interaction between the oldest and youngest of Jesse’s sons. God had already put it into David’s heart to lead Israel, though neither David nor his brother knew it yet. David would have to go through many trials before God gave him the throne as king, even though he was anointed by Samuel while he was still a boy. Here as he faces Goliath, in the battle against the Philistine army, it becomes obvious why God chose him. But God also had plans for David’s brother Eliab, just as he does for all of His people.

Lord, I have no idea what you have planned in the future for my children. But my deepest desire is that they will follow You and love You with all of their hearts. As we faithfully ask You for wisdom to teach them; speak to their hearts and lead them to walk in Your perfect will.

King Saul thought that it was enough to follow God’s instructions partially. He not only took the spoils of war for himself, contrary to God’s command, but he also set up a monument in his own honor, instead of honoring God. Saul’s arrogance was like the sin of idolatry. According to God’s standards, he was worshiping himself. Saul knew exactly what God required–but he thought he could pick and choose which instructions were convenient for him. His impressive monument became proof of his arrogance – and God took the kingdom from him and gave it to another.

Lord, as I seek Your will and purpose for my life, I want to be faithful to the instructions given in Your Holy Word. You have honored the position of wife and mother and required that it be given priority. Help me to remember this, as the world begins to squeeze me into its mold. Samuel was an honest, godly man who led Israel faithfully, but his sons did not follow in his ways. We are not told the reasons for this, but we are told that they turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice. (8:3b) Because of this corrupt and ungodly behavior by Samuel’s sons, the people began to demand that Samuel appoint them a king.

God gave them what they asked for–a tall handsome young man named Saul. But he came with a warning. This king and many of the kings after him would bring far more grief to the people than they had yet known, taxing them and drafting their sons into forced labor. Samuel said, “When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer you in that day." (8:18)

Lord, may we never forget to pray for our sons and daughters, raising them to be honest and trustworthy. Help us to be consistent in our own spiritual walk and in the discipline of our children. God bless our homes that they will be lights in a dark world, reflecting your love and faithfulness.

Samuel’s birth was an answer to Hannah’s fervent prayer. She had pleaded with the Lord, “If you will only look upon your servant's misery–and give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life.”
Later when she brought Samuel to Eli the priest, she said, “I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD."(1:11, 27–28)

Each year Samuel's mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. Hannah surely prayed for Samuel all the days of her life and God blessed her with more children.

Even though Samuel grew up among Eli’s wicked sons, he became a faithful judge and prophet of God. Samuel would go on to lead Israel through the transition from judges to kings, and become King Saul’s spiritual advisor – all this in response to God’s plan and a mother’s prayers.

Lord, help us to be faithful to pray daily for our children and grandchildren. Use them for your glory and purpose on this earth, and give us the wisdom we need to train them to follow You–even in a wicked culture.

Ruth’s people, the Moabites, worshiped the false god Chemosh, but Ruth chose to follow the God of her deceased husband, and return to the land of Israel. The Lord blessed Ruth, and her widowed mother-in-law, when Boaz bought Naomi’s land and married Ruth, thereby redeeming Naomi’s inheritance. Through this practical legal transaction by Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s husband, Boaz and Ruth became the ancestors of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The words of the Elders to Naomi were prophetic: “May you prosper in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem, because of the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman.” (Ruth 4:11b, 12b NKJV) Truly Bethlehem became famous at the birth of our Savior.

We never really know how our common every day transactions will fit into God’s plan for the future. Help us Lord, to develop an eternal perspective about life and how we live it. May we be like Ruth whose behavior won her the respect and praise of Naomi’s people who said to her, “May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge." (Ruth 2:12)

SAMSON

Samson led Israel for twenty years in the days of the Philistines. Judges 15:20 NIV

Israel’s history continued in the cycle of disobedience, judgment, and crying out for deliverance. Then, once again, the Lord would provide a judge to lead the nation to victory. Samson’s story is interesting, not because of his role as a judge, but because of his supernatural strength. He was a man with serious character flaws–who often behaved foolishly–yet God still used him to carry out His sovereign plan.

Israel’s primary struggle at this time was in the spiritual realm, between the One True God and Dagon, the demonic idol the Philistines worshiped. God’s plan would prevail, in spite of Samson’s moral failures, and his tragic end brought victory for Israel against the Philistines.

Lord, help me to remember that life is not all about me and mine. It’s also about Your plan for my church, neighborhood, community, country and the world. Give me an obedient heart so that my character will reflect your love for the world, not be conformed to it. May Your will be done "on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

Read Judges 6–7

When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior." "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us?" Judges 6:12 13 NIV

For seven years God had allowed the Midianites to attack Israel, and they so "impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help." (6:6) Israel had repeatedly returned to idolatry, followed by defeat and desperate prayers for help–then God would send a leader to deliver them from their enemies. Once again God listened to their cry, and this time, His choice of a deliverer was a young man named Gideon.

The Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon saying, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior." Surprised by this greeting, Gideon questioned, "If the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?”

Gideon could not understand how God was going to use him, the youngest member of his family in the smallest tribe, to lead Israel to victory. The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have…Am I not sending you?" (6:13–14)

Lord, like Gideon, sometimes we don’t understand why certain things happen the way they do. But I know that You have promised never to leave or forsake us. Give us the faith to trust Your provision and strength in our lives, even when we cannot see how You are going to do it.

JOSHUA'S FINAL WORDS

Read Joshua 24; Judges 2:1-10

"Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15 NIV

Just before he died, Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel together and they presented themselves before God. In the exact words of the Lord, Joshua reviewed all God had done since He brought them out of Egypt. Then Joshua said,

"Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness…But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:14–15)

God had kept all of His promises, but Joshua knew the people would persist in turning to their false gods. After Joshua’s generation passed away, another generation grew up, who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. (Judges 2:10) The older generation served the Lord, but failed to tell their children the stories of what God had done.

Lord, help us to remember to talk of your love and faithfulness to our children and to remind them often of the responsibility they will have in telling their children. Don’t let it be said of anyone in our family that they “neither knew the Lord nor what He had done for their parents.”

Israel served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the LORD had done for Israel. Joshua 24:31 NIV

The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.

When the Gibeonites heard about Israel’s miraculous victories at Jericho and Ai, they resorted to a ruse: They pretended to be traveling from a distant country when in fact they were near neighbors. They said, “This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is.” The men of Israel sampled their provisions “but did not inquire of the LORD.” (Joshua 9:14) Then Joshua signed a treaty with them and the leaders ratified it by oath.

In spite of the questionable way this treaty came about, God expected Israel to honor it. The Lord worked a mighty miracle on the day the Israelites defended the Gibeonites’: The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day till the nation avenged itself on its enemies. (Joshua 10:13)

Lord, help me to be careful when making promises and faithful to keep them, especially to my children–remembering that You are a covenant keeping God. “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” (2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV)

THE JORDON RIVER

"In the future when your descendants ask their fathers, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them… 'The LORD your God did to the Jordan just what he had done to the Red Sea.'” Joshua 4:21–23 NIV

The people Joshua was called to lead had not experienced the miracle at the Red Sea. They had heard the stories, but now they themselves watched as God did to the Jordan just what he had done to the Red Sea. No sooner had the priests set their feet on dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before. (Joshua 4:18b)

Later at Gilgal, Joshua took twelve stones and set them up as a memorial. Then he spoke to the people saying: "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What are these stones?' then you shall let your children know saying… 'The LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over'… that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever." (Joshua 4:21–24 NKJV)

We can never overestimate the importance of teaching our children what God has done. When they love and serve the Lord, our own influence will be multiplied many times over – but if we fail to pass on our faith, no other ministry will make up for the personal loss.

Lord, help us to find “stones of remembrance” that will serve as object lessons for our children. Give us thankful hearts to acknowledge You in everything we do.

GOD'S ETERNAL PLAN

Moses was a leader and prophet like no other, but in his anger at the people he made a fatal mistake: God had instructed Moses, "Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water." But instead of speaking to the rock, Moses struck the rock twice with his staff and said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?" (Numbers 20:8, 10) God was the miracle worker and Moses failed to give Him the glory – an offence which shortened his life.

The good news is that this is not the end of Moses' story. We see him again in the New Testament on the Mount of Transfiguration speaking with Elijah and Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, If you wish, I will put up three shelters–one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them and a Voice said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. (Matthew 17:4–5, 8)

Thank You Lord that Your plan for us goes far beyond this life, and that Jesus paid the price for all the times we have failed to honor You. One day we will stand with Moses and Elijah and all of those who have trusted in You. In that day, with sins forgiven, we will give all the glory to You.

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert, where he fasted and prayed for forty days. At the end of that time, when he was hungry, Satan said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." (Luke 4:3) Jesus answered by quoting Moses, "It is written: Man does not live on bread alone.”

Jesus referred to the story of Moses again when speaking to the Jews, “Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died…I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.” After he had said this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. (John 6:49, 51, 66) They refused to eat the true Bread of Life coming from the mouth of the Lord.

Dear Jesus, help me remember that You said, "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life." (John 6:27 NKJV) Lord, You are the One who provides our daily bread. Help us trust in Your daily provision, even as we trust You for everlasting life.

MAY IS ON ITS WAY

     For the past month I have been posting devotions based on the gospel accounts leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord. Now I will return to the Old Testament readings where we left off in the middle of March in the book of Deuteronomy.
     I always enjoy taking a break at the holidays and remembering the stories of Jesus, both His birth and His resurrection. And there is so much more to be found in this wonderful inspired Word of God. The Old Testament sets the foundation of our knowledge of God's wonderful plan of redemption. The prophets of old looked forward to the cross, just as we look back. They also looked forward to the glorious appearing of Jesus as we do today.
     My devotional readings are primarily focused on people and how their lives are an example for us today, both good and evil. As you read through the Bible, look for promises, commands, and timeless principles which can be prayerfully applied today. God speaks to us mostly through the written Word of God and it takes time to listen.
     I pray that each of you, my readers, will be as blessed by our journey through the Bible as I have been and continue to be. I can think of no other gift I could give to you that would be more valuable. Now as we get ready to move into May, I am anticipating and asking for God's special blessing on all of us.

EASTER SUNDAY

MARY MAGDALENE

Read: John 20:1–18

They (the angels) asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." John 20:13 NIV

Mary Magdalene was one of the devout women who supplied the needs of Jesus and His disciples throughout His ministry. She had been delivered from demon possession as were some of the others who followed Him. She was one of those who remained at the foot of the cross with Mary, the mother of Jesus witnessing his horrible crucifixion.

Three days later Mary went to the grave to grieve – but instead she had an encounter with angels at the empty tomb. Jesus was still there, so changed that she did not realize that it was He ─ until He spoke her name,"Mary." Then she turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (20:16)
Mary Magdalene was forgiven much and she loved much. Her life was dedicated to Jesus' ministry and to being a friend to other believers. God chose her to be the first one to see her risen Lord.

Thank You Jesus that You came to set people like Mary free from their sin. Thank you for dying for my sin. Help me to show my love for you as Mary did by serving other believers.

BEHOLD YOUR MOTHER

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:25-26 NKJV

Years before, Mary stood with Joseph before the Priest to dedicate her newborn Son. The old man Simeon had prophesied, "This child is destined to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too." (Luke 2:34-35) Now she was experiencing the ultimate piercing of her soul, as Jesus hung from the cross in agonizing pain.

When Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. John 19:26-27 NKJV

Jesus knew the emotional pain that this moment brought to His mother. God had chosen her of all women to give birth to His Son. But His plans for her were not over. After the resurrection and ascension, her other sons became devout believers. In Acts we read, These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. Acts 1:14 NKJV

Lord, so often Mary stood in the background watching God's plan unfold. She is an example I would like to follow when it seems better to be still and wait on You. What honor came to this humble woman as the Son of God saw to her needs in His last hour. I know that You are aware of my needs and the needs of my children. I pray that like Mary's sons they will follow You.

One of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water... These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled ..."They will look on the one they have pierced." John 19:34-37; Zechariah 12:10

TAKE A SWORD

He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. Luke 22:36 NIV

It has been obvious up to this point that everything Jesus did had a purpose and was part of His Father's plan. Just prior to entering the Garden of Gethsemane for prayer, He gave the apostles specific instruction to sell their cloaks and buy a sword. They must have thought they were preparing to fight for the Kingdom. But Jesus had a plan they never could have guessed. They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough." (22:38)

After a night of prayer in the garden; a contingency of soldiers and religious leaders came to arrest Jesus. When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" And one of them (Peter) struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. (22:49-50) What happened next would show everyone that Jesus laid down his life willingly - it wasn't taken from Him. Jesus said, "No more of this!" And He touched the man's ear and healed him. ( 22:51)

Dear Lord, I am unable to comprehend the love that motivated You to give Your only begotten Son to make such a sacrifice. That He was willing to leave the glory of Heaven for this very purpose, is more than any of us can understand. He willingly laid down His life so that we too could look forward to the glories of Heaven. At this time as we prepare to celebrate the ressurection of our Lord, I want to say how very thankful I am. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

THAT THE WORLD MAY KNOW

JESUS PRAYS FOR US

I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. John 17:4-5 NIV

Now Jesus spoke to His Father in the presence of His disciples. He was going to be entering Heaven very soon, restored to the glory He left behind when He became a man. The disciples must have been encouraged when they heard Him tell His Father,

"I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me." (17:8) "...My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one." (17:15)

Lord, I am so thankful that in this prayer You said, "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message." (17:20) As I meditate on this chapter and all the words You said for them and for us - I claim these words for my family: "I in them and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me." LESSON IN HUMILITY

AS I HAVE DONE TO YOU...
JESUS WASHES HIS DISCIPLES FEET

Read John 13:1–17

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and--poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet… John 13:3-5 NKJV

Jesus knew exactly who He was, where He had come from, and where He was going. In view of His coming crucifixion, how amazing that He does such a loving, comforting act in washing his disciple's feet.

Peter, also knowing who Christ was said, "Lord, are You washing my feet? You shall never wash my feet!" (13:8a) But Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."
Peter said, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" (13:9) With poignant symbolism, Jesus told him he only needed his feet washed, because the rest of him was already clean, forgiven and eternally secure. Only Judas did not qualify as being so cleansed.

Lord, I am so thankful for the daily cleansing You offer as I confess my sins and You are faithful and just to forgive them. Help me to follow this example of humility toward others, especially my own family.

THE TURNING POINT

THE BREAD OF LIFE

Read John 6:22–71

And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst." John 6:35

The crowds saw the disciples get into their boat and leave; but Jesus was not with them. They followed the disciples to the other side of the lake, not knowing that Jesus had walked on water to get there.

This was the dramatic moment when He would reveal to them who He really was, and that He knew who they really were: "I tell you the truth; you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill." (6:26)

Then Jesus said, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (6:51 )

This declaration of His coming death was the turning point: From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. (John 6:66)

Lord, it is hard to believe so many would be willing to benefit from Your miraculous provision, and yet not embrace You as Savior. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sin and for the daily miracle of life which comes from You.

Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?" But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (John 6:67-68)

SCATTERED BUT NOT ALONE

JOY NO ONE CAN TAKE FROM YOU

Read John 16:5–33

"It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you." John 16:7 NKJV

The disciples were still trying to grasp what Jesus was telling them. He was preparing them for the frightening, sorrowful days ahead. He said, "Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you." (16:22)

At one point, the men thought they understood. They said, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God." (16:29–30)

Jesus replied, “Do you now believe? Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone…”(16:30-32 NKJV) The disciples would indeed be scattered, but they would be gathered again, empowered by the Holy Spirit and made into the foundation of a church that would turn the world upside down.

Lord, I see from the lives of these men that I don't have to understand all that You are doing in the world. I just have to trust that You are the Son of God who has taken away my sin, and promised a fruitful, abundant life, by the power of Your Holy Spirit.

"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I Have overcome the world." John 16:33 NKJV

ABIDE IN ME

I AM THE VINE

"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." John 15:5 NKJV

These final words of Jesus to His beloved apostles were of utmost importance, both to them and to us. He was going away and they would carry on the work of spreading the gospel to the world. They did not yet have the indwelling Holy Spirit, but soon they would.

Jesus said, "You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain…" (15:16) How were they going to be able to accomplish this? Jesus said, "…The branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine…If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." (15:4, 7)

Dear Lord, I know that apart from You we will not see lasting fruit in our lives. I come to You this morning as an act of abiding in You. Speak to me from Your Word and plant Your will deep within my heart. I am asking and You have promised that it shall be done. I claim that promise today.

LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED

     The disciples still did not quite understand the clues Jesus had given about His coming death and resurrection: Thomas questioned Him about where He was going, saying, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (14:5-6)
     Then Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; " (14:8–9)
     Then Jesus promised, "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever–the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." (14:16–17)

God the Father would send His Holy Spirit not only to dwell with them–but in them. The Holy Trinity–Father, Son and Holy Spirit –all working together to abide in us forever! Thank You, Lord for this incomparable truth: "Christ in you, the hope of glory." (Colossians 1:27)

"Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:27 NKJV

FEAST OF THE PASSOVER

THE LAST SUPPER

Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. And He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat." Luke 22:7–8 NKJV

The feast of the Passover celebrated the day when God delivered the Jews from Egypt. The blood of the lamb was placed on the doorposts in the sign of a cross. The wine of the Passover feast represented the blood. On this occasion Jesus said, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you." (Luke 22:20 NKJV)

Jesus was the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world and give eternal life to all who believe. The time had finally come when Jesus would fulfill this prophesy:

Then He said to them, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. . . But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" (22:15, 21-22 NKJV)

Jesus knew He would suffer, He knew who would betray Him and He knew who would be with Him in His kingdom.

Lord, thank you for giving Your life blood so that we could live eternally in Your presence. One day, those of us who have believed will see You face to face and we will bow down in worship and praise for all You accomplished for us as the ultimate Passover Lamb.

"I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again." John 10:17b-18 NKJV

And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." Luke 22:19 NKJV

FRIDAY'S HERE BUT SUNDAY'S COMING

Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed -- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed . 1 Cor 15:51-52 NKJV

Easter is coming late this year, but in just a few weeks it will be here. I prefer late April - in March it always takes me by surprise. Easter came as a surprise to believers in Bible times as well. No matter how many times the Lord told them that He would die and rise again the third day - they couldn't seem to comprehend. They were ready to see Him as King, Messiah, Promised One - but suffering, death and resurrection - that was unthinkable!

This week we will take a break from our journey through the Old Testament - which prophesied that Messiah would suffer and die for our sins - and spend some time reading the New Testament passages leading up to Good Friday. Our hope comes not just on Friday (the cross) but on the Sunday that follows. Jesus died for our sins on Friday - but He conquered death on Sunday- so that those of us who receive Him need not fear death any more.

TEACH THE CHILDREN

Read Deuteronomy 4:1–40

"Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the LORD your God gives you for all time.” Deuteronomy 4:40 NIV

Moses anticipated that the children and grandchildren of those who were born in the desert would need to be reminded of what had happened there. He warned, "Be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them… Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (4:9; 6:7b)
God’s laws were not meant to burden His people, but to lead them to prosperity and blessing. The law functioned as a tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. (Galatians 3:24–25 NKJV)

Dear Father, thank You that the law no longer condemns us, but in fact, brings us to the only One who could satisfy its demands. Remind us to tell our children and grandchildren the stories of how You introduced us to the Savior, so they too, will place their trust in You.

DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED

JOSHUA AND CALEB

Read Deuteronomy 1:1–40

"See, the LORD your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession of it as the LORD, the God of your fathers, told you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Deuteronomy 1:21 NIV

The Israelites were miraculously delivered as God divided the Red Sea and let them walk across on dry ground– which should have been enough to convince them that God was on their side. In spite of this, when it was time to enter the promised land, they did not trust in the Lord their God. They said, "The LORD hates us; so he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us. Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart…" (27b-28a)

Ten spies were sent into the land, but only two believed that God would give them victory. God, through Moses, said to the people, "Not a man of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your forefathers, except Caleb and Joshua… your children who do not yet know good from bad…they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it." (1:35-39)

Lord, grant us the faith to do Your will, no matter how challenging it may be. Help us to wait upon you for the emotional and physical strength only You can give. I pray that we will be faithful to lead our children into Your promises, and not fall behind so that they must enter alone. “May All Who Come Behind Us Find Us Faithful!” (Jon Mohr)

A COMPASSIONATE HEART

MOSES AND AARON
Read Exodus 32:1-33:17

So Moses went back to the LORD and said, "Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. But now, please forgive their sin–but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written." Exodus 32:31-32 NIV

During the 40 days that Moses was on Mt Sinai receiving God's commandments, the people talked Aaron into making them a golden calf. Then they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." (32:4b) The next day the people sacrificed burnt offerings to the idol and began to dance and engage in revelry.

The LORD said to Moses, “I have seen these people… Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them.” (32:9-10a) Moses pleaded for the people saying that if God would not forgive Israel's sin, Moses was ready to be blotted out with them. Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened. (32:14)

Lord, give me a compassionate heart for those who are living disobedient lives. Teach me your ways so that I will know You better, and be an example of obedience to my family and friends. I know that I cannot do this without your daily presence in my life.

WISE ADVICE

JETHRO AND MOSES

Read Exodus 18:1–27

"The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you." Exodus 18:18b–19a NIV

When Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt, he sent word to him: "I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons." (18:6) As Jethro settled in, he quickly noted that Moses was trying to do everything himself.
If this man was going to keep going, Jethro observed, he would need help. His advice was to seek out capable, godly men to judge the simple matters, who would then bring the difficult cases to Moses. He said, " If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied." (18:23 NIV)

Just like Moses, we often think we have to do everything ourselves. It is important, not only for our own benefit, but also our children's, to give them age appropriate responsibilities.
Lord, help me to learn to delegate responsibility and to train my "child in the way he should go, so that when he is old he will not turn from it." (Proverbs 22:6)

Moses told his father-in-law about everything the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the LORD had saved them. Exodus 18:8 NIV

STAND FIRM

MOSES AT THE RED SEA

Read Exodus 13:17–14:31

The LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. Exodus 14:21–22 NIV

When Pharaoh finally let the Israelites go, God instructed Moses to take them the long way around so they wouldn’t face war with the Philistines because, "If they face war,” He said, “they might change their minds and return to Egypt." So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. (13:17–18) When they came to the Red Sea with the Egyptians pursuing them, it was no surprise that they were terrified.

Thanks be to God, their salvation was not dependant on their great strength and courage. Moses told the people "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." (14:13–14)

Thank You Lord, that victory does not depend on my own strength. When I am overwhelmed by life’s circumstances, I need only to be still and watch what You are going to do. Like Moses and Miriam I can sing, “The Lord is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation.” (Exodus 15:2a)

THE PASSOVER

THE LAST SUPPER

After nine plagues and refusals by Pharaoh to let the people go, in the tenth and final judgment, God sent His angel to strike the firstborn male of every family in Egypt. Only those who put the blood of a lamb on the two doorposts and the lintel would be spared. The Lord promised them, "… when I see the blood, I will pass over you. This event came to be known as the Passover. God commanded, "This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD—a lasting ordinance."(12:14) Over fourteen hundred years later, Jesus sat down to the Passover meal with His disciples and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is shed for you."

When Moses was young, God had already given him a heart to deliver his people–but his youthful, impulsive actions forced him to flee to the desert, where he lived as a shepherd for forty years. Finally, God's time had come to use the spark ignited in Moses' heart so long ago.

Out of a burning bush, God said, "I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." Moses' response was, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" (3:10–11) When Moses was young, it was all about who he was, the son of a princess, but now God says, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" How prone we are to act impulsively in our own strength, with disappointing results. But our failures don’t necessarily prove that the desired end was wrong. It may just indicate that we need to wait patiently for the Lord’s perfect timing.

The rescue of baby Moses is a remarkable story of faith and deliverance. Many babies lost their lives in this terrible purge by Pharaoh, and yet God had a plan for one little baby boy and his family. Jocobed trusted God as she lowered the basket into the water and prayed for compassion from Pharaoh's daughter. Miriam, in obedience to her mother, stood watch over the baby and spoke wisely to the princess. The result of their faith was that Jocobed was allowed to continue nursing her own baby, and one day Miriam would join her brother Moses as a leader in Israel. (Exodus 2:7–10; Micah 6:4)

At first glance, Joseph's story is about slavery, lies and betrayal, even by family members. But the underlying message is that Joseph prospered in spite of it all, whether he was a servant, manager or prisoner. God had plans for Joseph to rescue his whole family, including those who betrayed him. Joseph was a faithful young man; is it any wonder that God chose him for this important task? His priorities were determined by his faithfulness to God, not the pressures of a wicked culture. When tempted to commit adultery, he said, “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" (Genesis 39:9b)

Lord, give us the discernment to protect our children from the influences that could destroy their relationship with You. Help them to understand that sexual sin is a grievous offense against God, as well as their own bodies. Help us to teach them Your precepts so that they will know right from wrong and look forward to the future You have planned for them.

Jacob and Rachel waited many years before Rachel conceived. By then, Jacob already had sons by his wife Leah and their two maidservants, Zilpah and Bilhah. Rachael's firstborn, Joseph quickly became his father's favorite. This special treatment of the younger son caused resentment and hatred, particularly by the sons of Jacob's concubines.

Jacob must have forgotten the pain of his own father's preferential love for Esau, for now he was repeating the pattern. Both Isaac and Jacob suffered the loss of a son because of favoritism. Jacob had to flee to his relatives and Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt.

Lord, help us to avoid comparing our children or grandchildren in an unfavorable way. Give us sensitivity to the feelings of each child and the ability to appreciate his or her unique personality and abilities. I pray like the Psalmist, "Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer." (Psalm 19:12, 14 NKJV)

After years of hardship and deception by Laban, God miraculously increased Jacob’s wealth, and caused Laban to allow him to leave. Then, alone at night, after sending his family on ahead, God once again spoke to Jacob… A man approached him and they began to fight. Jacob wrestled all night long–evidently realizing this was a heavenly visitor. Jacob said to him, "I will not let you go unless you bless me." The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered. Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome." … So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."(Genesis 32:26b–30) This strange encounter with the Lord left Jacob with an outward limp that would always remind him and his descendants that his blessings came from God.

Lord, I can see in this story of Jacob how much You value humility. If we are to be blessed, that blessing will come from You, not from our own struggles. You are Jehovah Jirah, our provider, and like Jacob I will say God has been gracious to me, and I have all I need. (33:11)

No one can read this account of Laban’s blatant deception without feeling sorry for Jacob and Rachel, and especially for Leah. Some would say Jacob deserved to be tricked, since he had done the same to Esau.

But through it all, in spite of the actions of sinful men, God’s plan moved forward: Jesus came from the tribe of Leah’s son Judah, and God used Rachel’s son Joseph to save his people from extinction.

Looking at this whole story in hindsight we can say with the apostle Paul, “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began–" (Romans 8:28; 2 Timothy

Lord, help me to think in terms of the big picture, even when I can’t understand why things happen the way they do. Grant me the faith to believe that You have a much larger purpose in it all, which will work for our good and Your glory, even for generations to come.

Stopping to rest for the night, Jacob had a dream in which he met God personally…He saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above the ladder stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying." Up to this time, Jacob had no idea that God had a personal plan for his life, or that he would become the ancestor of Messiah. When he awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."( 28:16)

Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob. Genesis 25:28 NIV

Isaac, as an old man, was tricked by his son Jacob into giving him the firstborn blessing. His older son, Esau threatened to kill Jacob after Isaac died; so Rebekah told Jacob to flee until Esau's temper cooled.

To Isaac she said, "I'm disgusted with living because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, my life will not be worth living." (Genesis 27:46) So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. Go at once to Paddan Aram. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother." (28:2)

It is interesting to note that Isaac had never indicated his disapproval of his oldest son's marriages, or suggested that God might have a godly Hebrew bride for Esau.

So Esau, who wanted to please his father, married the daughter of Ishmael, in addition to the wives he already had. How sad that Isaac, whose wife had been chosen by God, did not instruct his son in how to choose a godly wife. Today, this story could read: “Isaac who loved sports, favored his athletic son, but neglected to teach him how to make godly choices.”

Lord, help us to faithfully teach our children to seek Your will in making important decisions.

Abraham wanted to find just the right wife for his son Isaac, someone from his own people, not from the Canaanites among whom he lived. So he sent his most trusted servant on a journey to his home country. Both Abraham and his chief servant believed that God would lead him to the right young woman. Abraham said, "The LORD, the God of heaven…who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, 'To your offspring I will give this land–He will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there." (Genesis 24:7)

It is so important to pray for our children’s future spouses. What better time to start than now, while they are young, covering that child and his parents in prayer throughout their lives.

Lord, help us to teach our children to seek Your wisdom in every small or large decision. You know the future and You have a plan for each one of them. Help them as they step out into life to make choices according to Your perfect will.

ABRAHAM AND ISAAC

Read Genesis 22

And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide Himself a Lamb” (Genesis 22:8 KJV)

After waiting so long for his promised son, Isaac, Abraham was asked to give him back as a sacrifice. This request had no basis in anything God had done with His people. False gods required human sacrifices, not Abraham's God.

The author of Hebrews gives us some insight into Abraham’s response: "Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death." (Hebrews 11:19) But still he was required to go through this test to show that God was first in his life–even before his beloved son.

Sometimes God brings us to a place in our lives when we must make a choice about something or someone He has blessed us with. Is there anything in my life that has become more important than my relationship with Him?

* * *

Lord, I pray that I will always put You first in my life. Not first as in being at the top of a priority list, but first in regard to everything on that list. I cannot have a right relationship with anyone else if I am not right with You. Thank You for providing Your Son, the Lamb of God, to make that relationship possible.

A COMPROMISED TESTIMONY

LOT

Read Genesis 18:16–19:38
So Lot went out and spoke to his sons‑in‑law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, "Hurry and get out of this place, because the LORD is about to destroy the city!" But his sons‑in‑law thought he was joking. Genesis 19:14 NIV

Lot’s story is in direct contrast to the story of Noah and the flood. Noah’s sons and their wives respected him and followed him in obedience to God, joining him on the ark. Lot’s sons‑in‑law thought he was joking when he warned them of coming judgement on Sodom.

Lot’s testimony was so compromised that his daughters tricked him into fathering their children, resulting in two wicked nations called the Moabites and Ammonites. Yet, in spite of this, Peter later tells us that Lot was a believer: a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard.) (2 Peter 2:7-8)

Lord, help us to carefully choose the environment in which we place our families. Help us to see beyond the beauty of the land or the monetary gain to make sure there is not a wicked “Sodom” nearby. Help us to train up our children by our own example and to teach them to pass down their faith to the next generation.

IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR GOD?

ABRAHAM AND SARAH

Read Genesis 17:1–18:15

Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD?" Genesis 18:13–14a NIV

At the age of ninety nine, God once again appeared to Abraham to confirm His covenant promise: He said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife … I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." (Genesis 17:15a–16) By this, Abraham knew that the promise was not for Hagar’s son, Ishmael, but for a son that God would give him through Sarah.

We are not told the reason why God waited so long to fulfill His promise to Abraham. It may be that He and Sarah had to come to the end of themselves and their own efforts. Unfortunately, their impatience caused great heartache for them and the generations that followed.

* * *

Lord, help me to be patient when Your answers are long in coming. I know that nothing is too hard for You, but sometimes my thoughts and actions don’t reflect that belief. Give me discernment to know when I should move ahead and act, and when I should just wait on You. Take away the anxiety I experience when things seem out of control and grant me the peace that comes only from You.

THE GOD WHO SEES ME

HAGAR

Read Genesis 15:1–16:15; Genesis 21:8–21

She (Hagar) gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her:" You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the one who sees me." Genesis 16:13 NIV

The story of Hagar is bitter-sweet. Hagar was an Egyptian maidservant forced to become a surrogate mother for Abraham and Sarah; she had few choices in life. So after she bore Abraham's son, she became disrespectful to Sarah.

Hagar's teenage son reflected her attitude by mocking Sarah’s son, Isaac and causing distress in the family. Hagar was told by an angel that her son would become a “wild donkey of a man”– and yet, God cared about her – He never left her alone, even when Abraham and Sarah drove her away. God actually spoke to Hagar the Egyptian maidservant and promised her that He had long range plans for her son and his descendants, the Ishmaelites.

Lord, when life seems out of control and family conflicts arise, help me to remember that You see it all. Help us to seek your wisdom in raising our children so that they will be followers of Christ, not “wild donkeys.” Give us the wisdom to discipline and teach them Your ways. Bless our family Lord, even to our children’s children.

THE TOWER OF BABEL

Read Genesis 11:1–9
"Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth." Genesis 9:1 NIV

In the very beginning when God created Adam and Eve, He blessed them, and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it." (Genesis 1:28) Then after God judged the earth and wiped out all but Noah's family, He once again told them to be fruitful and fill the earth.

Many generations later, in rebellion against God, the people of Babel built a massive tower and said, "Let us make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth." However, they failed to take into consideration our sovereign triune God, whose plans will not be thwarted. He said, "Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other." So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth." (Genesis 11:4, 7–8)

Lord, it seems apparent that the only way to true success in life is to seek Your will when we make our plans. Give me a willing heart to listen and obey the principles in Your Word. Help us to seek after You as a family, asking You for the gift of wisdom in every decision

END OF SUMMER THOUGHTS

Dear friends,

This has been a busy and fast moving summer, with a slowdown in posting on my blogs. I still have an east coast trip coming up this month with no access to my computer, so I won’t be up to speed until the end of September.

I hope all of you have had a great summer and have found time to be in the Word. I have managed to keep up my daily Bible reading whether in the High Sierras at June Lake, or sitting on my balcony in the early morning before the heat sets in.

We were blessed this past week as our oldest grandson was married to a lovely Christian young lady. They are only 19 and 20, but their love for each other and pledge to remain pure until marriage was a blessing to everyone. A surprise part of the ceremony was when they gave a gift to their parents of their purity rings saying that they had kept their promise and now were exchanging them for a wedding band. Not a dry eye in the audience!

The pastor said that the secret to being married 50 years is to fall in love every day with the same person. I have every reason to believe that if the Lord does not return first, they will celebrate their 50th together. They are starting out that journey with the Lord in the center of their marriage, and that is what it takes to get a couple through all of the challenges of life.

So, I just thought I would check in with my readers to greet you in the Lord and to assure you I have not dropped off the face of the earth. Many of you are going back to school or sending children off to school or college. It is nice to get back into the routine of things. Don’t forget to spend time in the Word!

THE RAINBOW

"Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember…" Genesis 9:16 NIV

Having never before experienced a rainstorm, much less a worldwide flood; Noah and his family spent more than a year inside the ark with animals of every description. After seven months, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.(Genesis 8:4) When the earth was completely dry, after another five months, Noah and his family finally stood on solid ground.

Before anything else, Noah built an altar of worship to the Lord. God promised Noah and his sons, "Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood– This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come…" (9:11–13) And then they saw it–a beautiful, indescribable glow of colors stretched from earth to Heaven and back to earth again!

Lord, I am thankful that You see every rainbow in the world, and none of Your promises will ever be forgotten. Today I am claiming Your promises of protection, wisdom, and victory for our family. In the midst of difficult circumstances, help us to trust and obey just like Noah. I am depending on You to bring our family safely through this life into Heaven. May each one come to know You in a personal way, trusting in your promises for all of life’s challenges.

A GODLY EXAMPLE

Noah lived in the most wicked generation this world has ever known–not a single family followed God. We are told that "The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time." (Genesis 6:5) Yet Noah’s testimony was so strong that his wife, his sons and even his daughters-in-law respected and followed him in obedience to God. This should give us encouragement and hope for raising a godly family in our own ungodly culture.

Sin is not only a travesty to us, Lord, for You said that Your "heart was filled with pain." I know that my impatient, unkind and angry thoughts are all a source of grief to You. I also know that You are my only source of healing, forgiveness and strength. Help me to come to You faithfully every day to find cleansing and forgiveness. Only then can I be the wife, mother and friend who will please you and uplift the ones I love. Help me to live a consistent Christian life so that our children will want to follow You.

Very little is said in Genesis about Enoch. We read about him again in the New Testament and find that Enoch was a powerful preacher who prophesied, "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones…” speaking of a yet future day. (Jude 14b)

Enoch is mentioned again in Hebrews, as one whose faith was counted for righteousness. Then one day, as Enoch walked with God, he was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. (Hebrews 11:5a)

Our lives may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but God honors those who place their faith in Him. We, like Enoch, can look forward to eternal life and perhaps even the Lord's return in our lifetime. (1Thessalonians 4:17)

Lord, give us the faith to trust You in every decision we make, so that we will bring glory to Your name. Help our children to walk as “children of light–finding out what pleases the Lord.”(Ephesians 5:8b,10) Make us like Enoch who walked with God.

ADAM AND EVE

Read Genesis 1:26–3:24
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,”… male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26a, 27b NIV

God created the heavens and the earth and all the living things that inhabited its boundaries. Then He created the first man in the likeness of Himself and He called him Adam. Adam named all the animals and found none among them that could cure his loneliness.

So God made from Adam's side a woman, and Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. (Genesis 3:20) Both husband and wife were fashioned in the image of the triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Dear Father, that little word "us" is our first glimpse of the Trinity, all present when You created the first married couple in Your image – body, soul and spirit. Sadly, those first wonderful days together were overshadowed by sin.

Thank You Lord, that You made a way to restore the family resemblance we once had to You. I pray that you will continue to work in my heart through Your Holy Spirit, and may that transformation be visibly reflected in my attitude and countenance – that others will see Jesus in me.

PURPOSE OF THIS BLOG

Since April of 2008 Living the Word has been based on readings through the New Testament, focusing primarily on individual people and the influence of the living Word of God in their lives.

Now I am going to go back to the beginning of my Bible and start with Genesis 1:1. Once again the focus will be on the lives of real people who lived in Bible times with a prayerful application to my own life and the lives of my readers.

Throughout the Old Testament, God spoke through the prophets and in the lives of people like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In these stories we see many pictures or "types" that point to the promised Messiah - our Lord Jesus Christ.

When the apostles preached about Jesus, they often did a review of Israel's history and the words of the prophets to prove that Jesus was the promised Messiah. We do well as Christians to know these stories as a basis for understanding all that He did for us on the cross.

THE GOD WHO SEES ME

IN THE BEGINNING GOD

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made." (John 1:1–3 )

We worship a God who brought forth an entire universe just by speaking. He is so powerful, and yet Jesus said, “The very hairs of your head are all numbered.”(Matthew 10:30) There is nothing that concerns me that He misses or ignores. This same Lord of the universe ─ Father, Son and Holy Spirit ─ will be with me throughout eternity.

Thank You, Lord, that nothing in my life goes unnoticed by You. As I marvel in the matchless beauty of the moon and stars on a cloudless night, how comforting it is to know that You see me. No matter how hectic life is, as I hurry about from day to day, You are always there to listen and guide my steps – And You will be there when my life on earth is completed and my faith becomes sight. LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Laodicea

"I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Revelation 3:15-16 NKJV

The church at Laodicea was proud and prosperous. Many see a comparison to the churches of today, with fine buildings and multiple programs. Jesus points out their pride saying,
“Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' -- and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked -- I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” (3:17-18)

The interesting thing in this warning is that it seems to be a true church going in the wrong direction. Jesus said, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.” (3:19)

Lord, it is so easy for us as believers to become apathetic and satisfied with the status quo. Forgive me of my lukewarm devotion to the ministry of our church. Light a fire in my soul that will not go out no matter what the circumstances – rich or poor. Help me to see others as You see them.

AN OPEN DOOR

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Philadelphia

"I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.” Revelation 3:8 NKJV

These letters to the seven churches describe the actual events at the time of this writing but because of their placement in a prophetic vision, some have viewed them as typical of the church in various stages of history.
If this is a valid secondary interpretation, then the Philadelphia church most likely represents the churches of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries of missionary outreach. God truly has given and still gives an open door for missionary endeavor. How long this will be, we do not know, but the opportunity is there today.

Others also see a composite picture of the church at any time in history. In this view the promise of deliverance is comforting: “Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Behold, I am coming quickly!” (3:10-11a)

Lord, I look forward to Your coming, perhaps in our lifetime. Help us to take advantage of the open door we have today for spreading the good news of salvation. Give me the opportunity to share my faith in You.

THE DEAD CHURCH

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Sardis

"I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Revelation 3:1b NKJV

The church in Sardis may have been an active busy church, but spiritually Jesus pronounces them dead – or at least ready to die. He says, “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God." (3:2)

This church was not looking for the return of Jesus and though there was a spark of life, it was ready to go out. He warns them, “Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.” Revelation 3:3b

Like many cold churches today, Sardis had some who were still trusting in Christ. He says of them, “You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.” (3:4)

This reminds me of the parable of the wedding feast where a man tried to enter without the proper wedding garment. This garment is the righteousness which true believers receive when they trust in Christ – sins washed away as white as snow.

Father, I am anticipating Jesus’ return, hoping that perhaps our generation will be the one that sees the return of Your Son. Thank you that He is the One who makes us worthy to walk with You in white.

DISCERNMENT

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Thyatira

"I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. Nevertheless I have a few things against you... Revelation 2:19-20A NKJV

The church at Thyatira, much like Pergamum, was influenced by pagan religion and immorality. Like many today, they mixed their Christianity with occult practices. Jesus refers to these practices as the "depths of Satan." (2:24).

Teachers of this corrupt form of Christianity were followers of demons and will be judged along with Satan in the future. When judgment comes He says, “...all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.” (2:23)

There was still a remnant of faithful believers at Thyatira and to them He says, "Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden. But hold fast what you have till I come” (2:24-25)

Lord, these verses remind me how careful we must be about what is taught in our churches. False teaching seems to creep in so easily and true believers need discernment. Keep us in Your Word so that we can recognize counterfeit Christianity by knowing the Truth.

"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ," Philippians 1:9-10 NKJV

A NEW NAME

THE COMPROMISING CHURCH

Read Revelation 2:12-17

“...you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.” Revelation 2:13b NKJV

These faithful believers in Pergamum were standing up for the faith even unto martyrdom. “But” Jesus said, “I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. (Revelation 2:14)

The idolatrous culture around them, including temple prostitution, was a snare to the church. This was such an important matter that Jesus said “Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.” (Revelation 2:16)

What a horrible thought that the Lord Jesus himself would fight against a church. We must not take lightly the instructions for purity in the Christian’s life. It is possible to be right in the main, and yet compromise our values in our personal lives and the teaching of the church.

Lord, protect our church against the infiltration of false doctrine and immorality. Give us the ‘hidden manna” of Your Word and help us to live consistent lives that are worthy of our “new names” written in Heaven.

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. “To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” Revelation 2:17 NKJV

THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH

Read Revelation 2:8-11

"And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write, 'these things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: "I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich)..." Revelation 2:8-9a

The congregation at Smyrna was a persecuted church and their material goods had been confiscated. Jesus tells them that He sees all that is happening to them and though they are poor, they are actually rich in hope for the future.
But the worst is yet to come, as some of them will be cast into prison even unto death. They will suffer for their faith, but for a limited time. Jesus said, “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison - that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days... (2:10a)

Though we may suffer persecution for our faith in this life, God’s Holy Spirit will give us the ability to endure. We have all of eternity to enjoy the rewards of a godly life. Jesus said, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (2:10b)

Lord, at this point in our culture we have not experienced real persecution, but there are many throughout the world who are in prison and have even died for their faith in the past few years. Should we ever have to endure this Lord, help us to depend on You. Even in a time of material blessing, keep us faithful unto death.

THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS

LEFT YOUR FIRST LOVE

Revelation 2:1-2

"To the angel of the church of Ephesus write ..."I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil....” Revelation 2:1a, 2a NKJV

The Ephesian believers were diligent in guarding the true gospel which had been given to them. Jesus commends them, “...You have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name's sake and have not become weary...” Then John writes the convicting words dictated by Jesus Himself: “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” Revelation 2:4

In their sincere desire to root out false teaching, a sad thing happened - they lost their love for the very people they were ministering to. After awhile perhaps they viewed everyone with suspicion rather than depending on the grace and love of God to be their guide. Jesus sternly warns,

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lamp stand from its place -- unless you repent.” (2:5) There would be nothing worse than a once vibrant loving church to lose its light in the place where they lived.

I can see from this passage that serving without love is futile. We can be oh so busy and oh so right and yet without love we are nothing. Restore to us a right spirit O Lord. Amen.

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Revelation

To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood... to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation 1:5b, 6b

Reading through the book of Revelation, we get a glimpse of the almighty power and glory of God in Jesus Christ. But at the same time we are reminded that this all powerful God loved us and gave His Son to die for our sins. The contrast of Jesus on the cross with Jesus in Heaven is breathtaking.
Though His own people rejected Him at His first coming, they will realise what they did in that final hour. John writes, "Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him... " (1:7)

Our Savior as portrayed in the gospels is now seen by John in Heaven as one like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters... (Revelation 1:13-15)

Lord, I can only imagine what it will be like to stand in your presence. Perhaps I will fall at your feet like John, but then hear your words of comfort: "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.” (1:17b-18a)

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." Revelation 1:8 NKJV

CONTEND FOR THE FAITH

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Jude

Beloved... I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 3b NKJV

Jude, the brother of James and of our Lord Jesus Christ writes a very serious letter to Jewish Christians of his day. He reminds them and us, “But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit." (Jude 17-19)

Jude describes these Mockers in highly descriptive terms as "ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ." (Jude 4b) He warns that grave judgment is reserved for those who corrupt the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ for their own gain. “These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage.” (Jude 16)

Lord I pray that You will protect our churches from the inevitable rise of apostate men and women. Give us discernment to recognize those who would cause divisions and confusion by their false teaching. Help us to become more familiar with the Truth of God's Word so that we can discern error in our midst.

“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God..." Jude 20-21a NKJV

LOVE ONE ANOTHER

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - I John

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 1 John 3:2 NKJV

As Christians struggle to live for God in a world that is opposed to Jesus Christ, John reminds us that when we see Christ we will be like him. But even now we can see glimpses of hope as the Spirit works in our hearts. He says, “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren” (1 John 3:14a)

Along with faith in the name of Jesus should come a unique love for others who are in the family of God. “And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.” (1 John 3:23)

Father, the most amazing thing is that You loved me and gave your Son to die in my place. As John writes, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:10-11) Lord grant me this supernatural love for my fellow believers.

If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen. 1 John 4:20 NKJV

WALK IN THE LIGHT

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - 1 John

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 NKJV

John the apostle who walked and talked with Jesus Christ encourages Christians to walk in love toward each other, confessing their sins and abiding in Christ. Even though these are believers, they must realize the reality of sin and spiritual warfare in their lives.

John explains, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9)

Where does this temptation to sin come from? It does not come from God, but from within ourselves “For all that is in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:16-17)

Lord, I am so grateful that you made a way for us to deal with sin in our lives. Thank you for your faithfulness to cleanse me from all unrighteousness and present me before the Father completely forgiven because of the cross. Thank you that ...this is the promise that He has promised us -- eternal life. (1 John 2:25)

SCOFFERS WILL COME

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Peter

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you... 2 Peter 2:1a NKJV

Peter writes, “Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle...that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets,...knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, (2 Peter 3:1a,2a,3)
These false teachers will question everything from the Genesis account of creation to the promised Second Coming of Christ. They will refute the gospel “even denying the Lord who bought them...And many will follow their destructive ways... “(2:1b-2a) Furthermore, they will ridicule believers saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." (3:4)

Lord, I thank you for the wonderful promise that “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise ... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (3:9) May we be found faithful until the day You take us home..

“You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:17-18 NKJV

ADD TO YOUR FAITH . . . .

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Peter

Read 2 Peter 1

His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us ... 2 Peter 1:3 NKJV

Peter writes this second letter to remind believers of all they have received in Christ. They have been saved by faith in Him and have been given “...exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature...” (1:4)

Now it is time, he says, to build on that faith in their relationships. He instructs them to “add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. " (1:5b-7)

This growth in grace and knowledge is not optional for the believer. “For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.” 2 Peter 1:9 NKJV

Lord, I thank you that as believers we can expect to see growth in our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. Help us to be diligent in examining these areas of self control and brotherly kindness. When things are difficult in our homes, communities or churches, give us perseverance and the ability to endure. Most of all give us kindness and love.

Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 2 Peter 1:10 NKJV

FERVENT LOVE

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Peter

... Be serious and watchful in your prayers, and above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:7b-8 NKJV

Peter continues to encourage Christians to grow in love for the brethren. He urges us to pay close attention to relationships as husbands and wives and believers in the church. He writes, “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God...If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies...” (4:10, 11b)

He calls for humility in the sight of God and men, trusting that He will supply our needs. He exhorts us to “humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7

Lord, I want to cast my cares upon you today. Help me to realize that I am not alone but can minister to others with the “ability which God supplies.” Help me to reflect Your love in all I do, especially in my own family. Help me to respond to attacks by the enemy with steadfast faith.

Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 1 Peter 5:8-9 NKJV

CALLED TO BLESSING

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Peter

"Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby." 1 Peter 2:1-2 NKJV

To the scattered and persecuted churches, Peter narrows his message down to the simplicity of faith: Set aside the issues that divide you and focus on the “pure milk” of the Word, growing in your faith and your Christian relationships. In regard to those outside the church, “...always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” (1 Peter 3:15b)

Our love for one another in the churches will be the greatest witness of the sincerity of our faith. Lord, I pray that I will be a blessing to my fellow believers, focusing on our common faith rather than the issues that would divide us. Help me to be ready to give an answer for the hope that is in Jesus Christ to anyone who asks.

James, in writing to the believers of his day, was also speaking of the final days preceding the Lord’s return. These passages are becoming more relevant every day as we watch the dismantling of financial institutions and hear of the fraud and greed which has caused millions of people to lose their homes and businesses.

When the pressures of life come along for us, we also are tempted to grumble against each other. We need encouragement to be patient and look up, because our Lord is returning. James reminds us, “Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!” (James 5:9)

Lord, these are frightening times. Help us to trust in You no matter what difficulties lay ahead. Give us the patience to fellowship in unity with other believers as James said, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another. . . The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16)

Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. James 5:7 NKJV

"God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:6b-8a NKJV

James continues to address the conflicts among Christians and the temptation to live in a materialistic worldly manner. He says, “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (4:4)

The source of the infighting according to James, was covetousness and arrogance. “Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”(4:2b-3)

In regard to arrogance he says, “Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. ( 4:13-14)

Lord, this passage speaks to my heart. We spend so much mental energy just worrying about what tomorrow will bring. Help us to keep our eyes on You and not forget to ask for the provision of our needs - and for wisdom to use your gifts rightly.

James had heard reports that these Christians were arguing among themselves. While some were living in poverty, others were flaunting their wealth. James calls for humility because all are rich in Jesus Christ. He speaks to the sin of envy saying,
“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, (and) demonic.” (James 3:13-15)

Lord, I know how easy it is to lose control of our tongues. Whether it be in anger or in gossip, the damage our words can do is unspeakable. Help me to think before I speak and especially to refrain from gossip about someone who isn’t present. Forgive me for the times I have done this.

Where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. James 3:16-17 NKJV

THE SOURCE OF WISDOM

Read James 1

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting... James 1:5-6a NKJV

James is writing to persecuted Hebrew Christians scattered into neighboring gentile cities. They faced both financial hardship and temptation as they struggled to live the Christian life in an immoral culture. James tells them to ask of God, who is willing to grant wisdom along with all good and perfect spiritual gifts.

Neither persecution nor temptation originates with God. Persecution comes from without, but temptation comes from the heart. James writes, “Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. James 1:13-14

While Paul had to deal with Jewish leaders who insisted that Christians keep the Old Testament law, James was dealing with the permissiveness which assumes that it doesn’t matter how we live. The book of James is very timely for the issues that Christians face today.

Lord, I pray that you will grant the stamina and wisdom we need to glorify You in an ungodly culture. Purify our hearts with the washing of Your precious Word, for we know that every good and perfect gift comes from You.

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." James 1:2-4

THE SACRIFICE OF PRAISE

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Hebrews 13:5 NKJV

Although I had memorized this verse years ago, I did not understand the context until I studied the entire letter to the Hebrews. Earlier he writes, “... for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven.” (10:34-36)
The cost of declaring faith in Christ was loss of employment and confiscation of property. Many accepted it joyfully but some were tempted to fall away. He encourages them to endure, “For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come. Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name." (Hebrews 13:14-15)

Lord, the apostles sang praises in prison; Your people endured persecution and even martyrdom for declaring faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Help us to live joyfully even when circumstances are difficult, offering the sacrifice of praise to Your name as we live out Your plan for our lives.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen...By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:1, 3 NKJV

This is the inspiration section of Hebrews. Some call it the “Hall of Faith.” These Old Testament believers didn’t have the clear picture of redemption that we have in the completed Scriptures. They saw it by faith from afar off, believing in God’s promise of a Messiah. They obeyed what God told them to do, even when they didn’t fully understand. For them, and for us, the requirement for pleasing God was believing Him. For ...without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (11:6)

Lord, reading about these heroes of the faith, we are put to shame. Help us to "lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith..." Amen. Hebrews 12:1b-2a

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth....But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. PROPHESY FULLFILLED

Flight to Egypt

Read Matthew 2:1-15

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” Matthew 2:13 NKJV

Centuries before this, God instructed the family of Jacob (Israel) to settle in Egypt because of a great famine in the land. Now the family of Messiah, descendants of Jacob are forced to flee to Egypt once again. This time just until the death of Herod, but still a significant event in the light of prophesy.

What was to both generations a time of sorrow and testing was actually the moving of the providence of God in bringing about the salvation that is so freely offered to us today. Jesus, the Son of God, was also a descendant of Jacob through his mother Mary, and the fulfillment of a promise made to Jacob. God's perfect plan was being worked out in spite of the acts of wicked sinful men.

Lord, help us to trust you and your plan for our lives, in spite of the circumstances we face. You are the God of history and You have our future in Your hands. Help us to never forget that as we look with dismay at threatening world events shaping up around us.
